Photogrammetry and Photobooth

Advances in digital imaging and algorithms that stitch these images together to create accurate 3D renders of an object – be it a building, landscape or product – are changing fields as diverse as archaeology, manufacturing and retail. In retail, for example, the rise of photobooth services has allowed small, niche and independent retailers to sell through Amazon, Etsy and web platforms that extend their reach and give them an international presence. And for such applications the image quality, the resolution, the configurability and the multi-camera functionality that Sony’s Alpha cameras enable can provide a significant competitive advantage.

Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry first emerged in the 19th century, yet recent years have seen significant advances in photogrammetry, with improvements in imaging technologies and software algorithms enabling ever larger and more accurate 3D renders to be created. At the heart of any photogrammetry implementation is image quality, with greater resolutions giving access to greater detail and more precise measurements to be taken. Additional requirements vary and may include the simultaneous triggering of multiple cameras, or low-weight for use with drones. Weighing just 509g, the ILCE-7C is the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame system and is ideally suited to photogrammetry. For when even longer flight times are required, the 132g RX0M2 with 1” sensor is also available. Virtually any facet of both cameras can be controlled via Sony’s SDK, while their Exmor R sensor and BIONZ-X image-processing engine deliver the highest resolution (and lowest noise) of any camera of comparable weight and size.

Photobooth

The rise of larger and the huge array of smaller, often niche web retailers has enabled companies to reach ever larger audiences across the planet. For each website consistency is vital and a host of photobooth companies enables even the smallest product manufacturer to deliver the style required by the retail sites – creating specific angles and 3D renders of their products. Automation is critical for this sector, with image background, lighting, and size all pre-determined and with products shot on multi-camera rigs to do so. Sony’s SDK is among the first to enable near-synchronous multi-camera capture. It works with Linux, Windows and Mac OS, which is predominantly used by leading photobooth organisations, and can be used with a diverse array of Sony cameras including the 61 megapixel ILCE-7RM4A, and the 509g ILCE-7C.
